When the Shade Trees Are Gone
In Canton, hydroseeding often comes down to trees that are no longer there. The emerald ash borer was discovered in Canton in the summer of 2002, and in August 2023 an EF-0 tornado uprooted trees across parts of the township. A yard that was shady for twenty years becomes a sunny yard overnight, and the old shade-grass mix, roots and stump holes do not make a lawn on their own.
From shade to sun
After a tree comes out, we grind or fill the stump area, settle and top up the soil, and regrade the low spot the root ball left. Then we pick a seed blend for full sun instead of matching the thin shade grass that was there. Hydroseeding fits these jobs well because one pass covers the patchy areas and the open middle at the same time, with mulch holding moisture on ground that suddenly bakes in July.
A township built fast
Canton had 11,057 residents in 1970 and 98,659 by 2020, making it the second-largest township in Michigan. Most of the housing went up on former open land in a few decades, so many subdivisions share the same builder-era issues: thin topsoil, compacted clay under the sod and lawns that never rooted deeply. Core work, fresh topsoil and overseeding go a long way here.
Creeks and drains
The south of the township drains to the Lower River Rouge, with Pine Creek running from the northwest corner toward the southeast. Lots that back onto a creek or an open drain need extra care; sediment from a bare yard goes straight in.
Permits
Wayne County is the enforcing agency for soil erosion permits in Canton. Projects over one acre, or within 500 feet of a lake, stream or open channel drain, need a county permit before earthwork begins. On those sites we install silt fence and stabilize disturbed ground as part of the plan.

Canton Questions
We lost a big ash tree. Can the area be seeded right away?
Once the stump is ground and the hole is filled and settled, yes. We regrade the spot and seed it with a full-sun blend.
Should I use the same seed as the rest of my lawn?
Not if the area changed from shade to sun. We match the blend to the light the yard gets now.
My Canton subdivision lawn is thin everywhere. Is that the soil?
Often. Fast-built subdivisions frequently got little topsoil over clay. Aeration, added topsoil and overseeding usually fix it.
My lot backs onto a drain. Does that change anything?
Yes. Being within 500 feet of an open channel drain can trigger a Wayne County permit on larger work, and we keep sediment out of it either way.
