Big Lots in Northern Macomb
Hydroseeding in Washington Township usually means more ground per job. The township covers nearly 37 square miles with about 792 people per square mile in 2020, far fewer than the suburbs to the south. Lots of an acre or more are common, and many homeowners are turning old field or pasture into lawn.
Orchard history
Westview Orchards was founded here in 1813, and the township's old settlements, such as Mount Vernon and Clifton Mills, grew up around farming. Old orchard and crop ground can carry good topsoil, but it can also have years of weed seed. We kill off existing weeds, work the surface and then hydroseed, which gives better germination on rough rural ground than dry broadcast seeding.
Higher and cooler
The township sits at about 781 feet, with Clifton Mills near 853 feet and Mount Vernon near 830. The weather is similar to Detroit's but generally a few degrees cooler, with more winter snow. Slightly cooler conditions push our ideal fall seeding a little earlier here than in the inner suburbs, so seed has time to root before the ground freezes.
Acreage seeding
On a large lot, sod is rarely practical. Hydroseeding covers an acre quickly and evenly, and a mulch layer protects seed on open ground exposed to wind. For back acreage that will not be mowed weekly, a meadow or low-maintenance mix is an option.
Growth and new homes
Population rose from 19,080 in 2000 to 28,165 in 2020. New homes on rural parcels need drive aprons, septic fields and yards seeded. Septic fields in particular need a shallow-rooted grass cover, not deep-rooted plants.

Washington Township Questions
Can you turn an old pasture into a lawn?
Yes. We kill the existing weeds, work and level the surface, add topsoil where needed and hydroseed.
Should I seed earlier in fall here than in Detroit?
A little earlier, yes. Washington Township runs a few degrees cooler, so seed needs more lead time before freeze.
What should go over a new septic field?
A shallow-rooted grass cover. We hydroseed septic fields with a turf mix, not deep-rooted plants.
Is hydroseeding practical for a full acre?
It is one of the most practical ways to seed an acre, much cheaper than sod.
